Yesterday my first group of trainees from the Tortoise and Hare completed their Ice Cream Run 5k. Many of these runners were brand new to running, or had not run in a very long time. Each of them set a goal in the week leading up to the race, and as I waited at the finish line as each one of them surpassed those goals. It was such an incredible experience, and just as gratifying as my own race finishes.
For me, one of the great things about running is the sense of achievement each and every person can receive from it. We can all set goals, whether it is running to the next lamp post or running across the country, setting a 5k PR or setting a world record. It takes thought and self-assessment to set those goals. And it takes courage and determination to achieve them. Alberto Salazaar said "Standing on the starting line, we're all cowards." and each of us has to face the fear of failure, and sometimes even failure itself, in order to achieve our goals.
So, I urge each of you to think about your next running goals, and have the courage to go after them.
